The Explaination Behind the Vampire Legends

Vampire myths were probably started by the disease porphyria, which occurred frequently in Transylvania. Porphyria is a blood disease where blood cells stop carrying oxygen. Resulting in tissue damage, giving the person sickly pale skin, and the appearance of teeth due to gum damage. Sunlight exposure makes the condition worse. Some strains of porphyria are have neurological conditions, which would lead a person to insanity. Also drinking blood was a treatment for this disease, the main depiction of a vampire. Rabies could also be behind vampire legends, it causes hypersensitivity, unusual sleep patterns, and intense sexuality. “Rabies is also associated with the compulsion to bite others, and a bloody foaming at the mouth. These two diseases could possibly explain the origins of vampire legends, and perhaps also why they are so widespread.”

The Death of Prince Dracula

No one knows for sure exactly how Vlad III died, he could have been killed during the battle against the Ottoman Empire. Some think he was killed by his own men. But some believe his own brother Radu the Handsome killed him, even though he supposedly died a few years before. It is also possible that Vlad III was assassinated by the Turks, since he was beheaded. But most “Stories seem to agree that his body was decapitated by the Turks and the Sultan of Istanbul preserved his head in honey and moonshine and kept it on display on a stake.”

Vlad III was Perfect for the Roll of a Vampire in Bram Stokers Novel “Dracula”

Vlad III was perfect for the roll of a vampire in Bram Stokers novel Dracula, mostly because of his name and reputation. He was known as a cruel ruler who was killed by his own brother, Radu the Handsome, who cut off his head and preserved it in honey. Radu then sent the head to Vlad’s worst enemy, the Turks of the Ottoman Empire. To further explain his reasoning, it is believed that The Order of the Dragons in which Vlad III and Radu’s father was involved, was created to protect Christianity. While Radu agreed with his father that the Order was important, he wanted to become an alliance with the Turks, while Vlad III did not. Radu wanted Vlad’s cruel reign to end so he assassinated him plain and simple, Radu wanted the powerful Ottoman Empire as a friend, not an enemy. Vlad was a cruel, and blood drunk ruler, whose name meant “son of the devil” he was the perfect inspiration needed for Bram Stokers book “Dracula.”

Apparently for Dracula, honesty is the best policy. there are many stories which exploit the softer side of the cruel prince, which completely differ from the horrifying traits as depicted by the author of the book Dracula. The story of the foreign Merchants tells that one man heard of Vlad’s honest and loyal city wanted to test this theory. so he left a cart of 160 gold coins over night outside, and when he returned the next day they were gone . He reported the crime to the prince, and he sent out a search to find the thief. Later the thief was caugt and impaled, but the merchant was confused, he went to the prince and said, ‘My money had indeed been returned but there is an extra coin.’ The prince had put the extra coin there as a test, to see if the merchant himself were honest. And then the prince told him that if he had not reported the extra coin he too would have been impaled. This honesty and loyalty the prince demanded was a strange quality, why would a heartless, Cruel prince care about those things. It is not a known trait of the cruel Vlad Dracul III.

Where the Real Legends of The Dracula Began

Vlad the Impaler was known for his violent behavior and thirst for human blood, but not to drink. He often engaged in the actives involving the torture of so-called “evil-doers.” His victims would often be, skinned, boiled to death, decapitated, hung, burned alive, blinded, strangled, roasted, shackled, nailed, stabbed, and limbs were cut off, along with noses, ears, and sexual organs. But his ultimate favorite form of punishment was impalement, a stake stabbed through the body. Which is of course, according to Bram Stoker—the one who turns Vlad Dracul III into Count Dracula in his famous book— is the only way to kill the “living dead.” But some legends weren’t entirely fabricated, inspiration for the blood drinking may have come from Vlad’s frequent dinners amongst a forest of rotting corpses. Also there’s the whole “burning of the sick and poor” thing. Vlad invited all the sick and poor people to his castle for a feast, then he boarded them inside and set the room on fire, to rid himself of the burden they gave him. He didn’t needed a reason to kill you, if you were in his way that was reason enough for Vlad Dracul III.

Vlad Dracul III was well known as the impaler, because his favorite form of punishment was a stake through the body of “evil-doers,” which is believed to be the way of killing vampires, strangely enough. He was an unmerciful prince, who was blood drunk with power, and would torture anyone for any reason. Vlad even impaled his own mistress, for telling him she was pregnant. He was the prince of Wallachia, a Provence of Romania, and ruled for a short time in the 15th century. His nick-name “Dracula,” indirectly, means dragon, as in The Order of the Dragons, a secret religious society in which his father was involved. But in the Romanian language dragon can be translated to devil, many believe he was a demon, especially after he trapped all the poor and sick people of Wallachia in his castle and burned them alive. Ironically the secret society his father belonged to was established to protect the catholic religion, interestingly enough the symbol on the societies crest was a dragon wrapped around a cross, a symbol of the devil. So it isn’t hard to believe that he and his father were vampires, after all ‘dracu‘ means son of the dragon.

Count Dracula

I chose to do my research project on Vlad Dracul, otherwise known as Count Dracula, because his life inspired the first vampire legends. Dracula inspired thousands of fairy tails, books and of course the classical Hollywood horror film “Dracula”. Count Dracula impacted American literature by inspiring vampire legends that still influence our societies outlook on the unknown. He supposedly thirsted for blood, and preyed on the poor and crippled. His real name was Vlad Dracul III, and he really did exist.
